How far is a 5K in miles
A 5K is 3.1 miles: 5 kilometers, or 3.107 miles exactly. This page puts the distance into everyday terms, shows how long it takes at common paces, and explains how to train for a first one. The generator below builds a 5K plan around your run days.
5K: how far in miles, laps and 10Ks
The K stands for kilometer, so a 5K is 5,000 meters. That is 3.107 miles, exactly 12.5 laps of a 400-meter track, and half of a 10K. Most road 5Ks are an out-and-back or a loop in a park; track 5Ks are run as 12 and a half laps.
| Race | Miles | Kilometers |
|---|---|---|
| 5K | 3.107 | 5 |
| 10K | 6.214 | 10 |
| Half marathon | 13.109 | 21.0975 |
| Marathon | 26.219 | 42.195 |

How many miles is a 5K exactly, and why 3.1 is the usual answer
One kilometer is 0.6214 miles, so five of them make 3.107 miles. Races, apps and this site round that to 3.1. If your watch shows 3.2 at the finish, the course is not long. GPS adds a little on every corner, and you rarely run the measured shortest line.
The distance is the same for everyone. A 5K in miles for a woman, a man, a walker or a stroller pusher is 3.1 miles; only the time changes.
5K races, 5K runs and the 5K on your app
A 5K race, a weekly timed park run and a 5K on a treadmill or a phone app are all the same distance, but they are not quite the same effort. A race has a measured course, a start line and a timing chip. A park run or a club run is the same distance on a course measured less strictly. A treadmill or app 5K is whatever the display says, which is accurate on a treadmill and approximate on a phone. When you compare times, compare like with like, and expect the race to be a little faster than the training run: the crowd pulls you along.
How long does a 5K take at your pace
Pace is finish time divided by 3.107 miles. The table gives the pace behind common finish times; the 5K pace chart covers every minute from 15 to 45.
| Finish time | Pace per mile | Pace per km |
|---|---|---|
| 20:00 | 6:26 | 4:00 |
| 25:00 | 8:03 | 5:00 |
| 30:00 | 9:39 | 6:00 |
| 35:00 | 11:16 | 7:00 |
| 40:00 | 12:52 | 8:00 |
If you have a pace in mind and want the finish time, the running pace chart works in the other direction.
How to train for a 5K run
A first 5K takes about 8 weeks from no running, with a run-walk start. If you already jog a couple of times a week, 4 to 6 weeks of sharpening is enough. The couch to 5K plan builds from short runs to the full distance, and the beginner plan suits anyone who can already run a mile or two. The generator builds 5K plans from 4 to 24 weeks and keeps the long run at 6 miles or less.
- Three or four runs a week. The plan's default is Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and a longer run on Sunday; drop Saturday if three days is what you have.
- Keep every run easy until the distance feels normal. Intervals come later, and only in plans for runners who have raced before.
- One week of taper is enough: the generator cuts the last week down so you start fresh.
