How long does it take to run a marathon?
How long does it take to run a marathon? Your pace per mile times 26.2: a 10:18 mile gives 4:30, a 9:09 mile gives 4:00, and walking the whole way at 15:00 per mile takes about 6:33. This page lists finish times by pace and explains what moves yours. The generator predicts your own time from a recent race.
Marathon finish times by pace
The marathon is 26.219 miles, so every minute per mile is worth about 26 minutes at the finish. That is why a small change in pace moves the clock so much. These rows come from the same engine as the marathon pace chart.
| Finish time | Pace per mile | Pace per km | Halfway |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3:00 | 6:52 | 4:16 | 1:30 |
| 3:30 | 8:01 | 4:59 | 1:45 |
| 4:00 | 9:09 | 5:41 | 2:00 |
| 4:30 | 10:18 | 6:24 | 2:15 |
| 5:00 | 11:27 | 7:07 | 2:30 |
| 5:30 | 12:35 | 7:49 | 2:45 |
| 6:00 | 13:44 | 8:32 | 3:00 |
Each goal time has its own page with mile and kilometer splits, for example 4:30 and 5:00. For a time not in the table, the pace calculator turns any goal into pace.

How long does it take to run a marathon for a first-timer
Plan for four to five and a half hours if this is your first and you train for 16 to 20 weeks. A first marathon is rarely about the clock. Holding an easy pace from the first mile and finishing strong is the real goal, and runners who do that often surprise themselves in the last 10K.
Check the course time limit before you register. Many races allow six hours or more, some less, and the limit matters if you expect to walk parts of the course.
What decides your marathon time
- Training miles and long runs. The long run teaches your legs to hold pace after 20 miles; without it the last 10K is a walk.
- Pace discipline. Starting 30 seconds per mile too fast costs minutes later, not seconds. The first mile should feel too easy.
- The course. Hills, turns and a crowded start add time; a flat course with a wide road is the fast choice.
- Weather. Heat slows everyone. On a hot day, slow the goal and drink at every aid station.
- Fueling. 30 to 60 grams of carbohydrate per hour keeps the pace from fading; see marathon fueling.
Predict your own marathon time
The Riegel formula scales a recent race to the marathon: a 2:00 half marathon predicts about 4:10, a 1:45 half about 3:39, a 55-minute 10K about 4:13. Predictions from short races assume marathon-specific mileage, so treat a 5K-based number as a ceiling, not a promise. Enter a recent race in the generator and it shows the predicted finish and sets training paces from it.
If the prediction is far from the time you hoped for, pick a plan from the marathon training plans and let the weeks close the gap rather than the pace on race day.
How long does it take to walk or run-walk a marathon
Walking at 15:00 per mile takes 6:33; at 17:00 per mile, about 7:26. A run-walk pattern that averages 12:00 per mile finishes in 5:15, and 10:00 per mile gives 4:22. If you plan to walk, choose a race with a generous time limit and tell the generator you are a first-timer so the long runs grow gently.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to run a marathon on average?
This site keeps no finisher statistics, so it does not quote an average. Your own number is your pace times 26.2 miles: 4:22 at a 10:00 mile, 5:15 at 12:00, 6:33 walking at 15:00.
How long does it take to do a marathon walking?
About 6:33 at a brisk 15:00 per mile, closer to 7:26 at 17:00 per mile. Check the race cutoff first.
How long does it take to run a full marathon compared with a half?
More than twice as long. A 2:00 half marathon predicts about a 4:10 marathon, because pace drops as the distance doubles.
How long does it take to run a marathon at a 10 minute mile?
4:22. A 12 minute mile gives 5:15 and a 9:09 mile gives 4:00.
